The Lesson I Learned from an Opportunity Missed

Reflecting on Hesitation
A few years ago, I faced an opportunity that would have transformed my writing career. A book marketer offered to take my book to the next level, promising greater visibility and sales. The catch? I needed to pay an upfront fee of $5,000, a sum I neither had nor would raise in time. Coupled with my doubts about the promoter’s authenticity, I hesitated, and ultimately, the opportunity slipped away.

The Cost of Inaction
At first, I told myself that missing the chance was a wise decision. After all, I couldn’t be sure the offer was legitimate. But a dear friend seized the same opportunity and skyrocketed to bestseller status. I did not ignore the pang of regret. Tracy’s boldness set her on a path of lasting success. I still wonder how my life would have changed if I had acted.

What Would I Do Differently?
Should such an opportunity come my way again, my approach would be different. I would first take the time to research and verify the authenticity of the offer. If the opportunity proved legitimate, I would go above and beyond to gather the required funds. I would even metaphorically “sell my house” to make it happen! I have come to understand that, while prudence matters, undue hesitation can cause irreparable setback.

What is the Takeaway for You?
Life will always showcase opportunities that would demand spontaneous decisions. But here is the key: always weigh the impact of any opportunity before jumping in or walking away. Ask yourself, “What will this decision mean for me in five years to come? Will I regret not trying, or celebrate giving it all it takes?” Bear in mind that growth often lies beyond the boundaries of comfort zones. But reasonable action is the bridge to the next level of achievement.

This felt like watching someone walk to the edge of a diving board, heart pounding, toes curled over the edge—and then stepping back. Not because they didn’t want to dive, but because they weren’t sure if the water was deep enough. And who can blame them?

Life has a strange way of wrapping its best chances in layers of doubt. Sometimes, it dresses opportunity like a scam just to see if we’re paying attention. And other times, it puts fear in the driver’s seat and asks us to navigate anyway.

What struck me most is how honest this is—not just about missing a shot, but about what it feels like afterward. That ache in the chest that whispers, “That could’ve been me.” It’s a quiet kind of pain, like watching a train leave the station holding your dream ticket.

But here’s the thing: wisdom doesn’t always come from the things we do right. Sometimes, it comes from the “almosts.” The ones that sting a little, but sharpen our vision for the next time life comes knocking.

You turned a regret into a compass. And that’s no small thing.

Awesome! I am greatly touched by your comprehension. There are still opportunities, and I pray we get clarity so we do not mess them up. I appreciate your comprehension.
